it doesn't really matter what reason you use for extension, as long as you show them proof of your current immigration status (including valid work permit, study permit etc), fill out the extension form you get at the consulate, with 2 passport size photos ( if i remember correctly). photocopies of your passport is also required. usually the extension will be 5 years long.
