It's not always the case.

At the time of my 2nd EAD application, my first EAD had been expired for a couple of months (I was on H1B then). I chose the "Renew" EAD option and submitted my 2nd EAD application (before I read Pijiang's posting on this matter). However, in 2 months, I received the EAD with 2 years' validity starting from the date of approval (not a date continue from last EAD's expiration date).

I do not know whether it was a mistake by USCIS or they do not always set your new EAD starting date to be the expiration date of your previous one (especially when the EAD has expired for a while).
