You can apply for EAD.

Download I765 and apply for EAD. It will give you the right to work legally in the States. The disadvantage of it is that you have to renew it every year.

In another words, while you are pending for I485, you don't have to hold any valid nonimmigration visa status. Your status will become AOS (adjustment of status).
