AP的I-94過期 le, Should I keep stay USA ( AOS status)

, My son's I-94( AP based) will expire next month, AP is still effective until 3/20/09, I hear that AOS can stay USA no matter what the expiration date of I94 date. It that absolutely right?, Or if he could make just a short leave ( couple days) to Mexico/Canada this month, does he can switch a new I-94 with one year period.
I read the first post in this forum, any the preson with I94 expiration date will be deposted even you have an application of I485????????????????
