AP/H1 return US from Mexico cruise?

I am a H1B holder waiting in the long 485 line. Last year, I used AP to visit China and came back continuing working under the original H1B. I wonder if I am qualified to come back to US without a valid visa from a short visit of Mexico/Canada -- as a normal H1B is? (I am considering a Mexico cruise trip with my parents.)

My H1B I-94 (much longer effective date) was surrendered when I left for my China trip. My current I-94 is an AP I-94 at the entry port (only 1 yr effective date - soon to be expired).

Can I make the trip? Need expert's advice. Many thanks first.
