ask Pijiang and 863211 for help

I am in grace period ( 30 days after J1 expeired) , could I change my status now ( in Jan. 2009 ) after my j1 experied date :Dec.31, 2008. I suppose to have a 30 days grace period until Jan.30? Many thanks.
