My situation was very similar a few years ago. I got a 3-year H1B from a company in 2004. then moved to a teaching position at a university in 2005. In 2007, I got an offer from a big company but based on the opinion of the company's lawyer, he told the team leader the quote was needed and then I lost the offer.

I am not sure that lawyer is exactly correct or not, you'd better contact a good lawyer to double check.
