help: H1b re-enter USA

I hold a H1b but do not have a valid H1b visa stamp on my passport.If I visit Canada, can I re-enter USA without a new visa stamp? Is the automatic re validation rule still valid? BTW,how long does it take to get a tourist visa from Canada embassy? I had problem to get a tourist visa from Mexico before because my F1 visa was expired at that time. Do I need a valid visa stamp in order to get a Canada visa?
