H1 to F1 question, Pjiang please help!

My friend was working with a company on H1B visa. Before he was laid off, he applied for admission to a university. After he got his I-20 from the university, he submitted his F1 visa application. Then after he received his F1 application receipt, he resigned from his company and went to the school two weeks later. His F1 application was approved 2 months after he went to the college.

My friend's question: He went to the college before his H1-->F1 application was approved, was there any problem with his legal immigration status during his transition period? Will there be any problem with his I-485 application?
