If you work in a higher education system or research institution as a research assistant or postdoc, the contract is normally quite flexible, like one year contact or two year contract. Let us elabotate H1 and 485 respectively.
1. As to H1, if you leave your H1 current job for over 6 months or a year, your H1 will be void. You are not on the payroll any more.
2. Since 485 (GC) is for future job, as long as you can provide a RFE response, you will be all right. The question is how you can provide your paycheck, w2, etc.
