H = H-1 or H-4 status; L = L-1 or L-2 status. If your current status is H1/H4 or L1/L2, you just get an H1/H4 or L1/L2 visa from a U.S. consulate in China to come back and your I-485 will be OK. Otherwise, you need to get Advanced Parole (AP) before you leave U.S.
