If all your concerns is "4年後,孩子要申請大學了", this is an issue has nothing to do with USCIS/employer, and I think you may be over concerned.
You'd better to check individually the prospective school's policies on residence requirement. Normally your living in the state for a certain amount of time (say 1-3 years) in prior is sufficient, even though you are not working/have no incoming/not paying tax at all.
