Can I use AP to come back and still use my H1B to work?

I need to go to Canada for a few days. I have AP now but don't have EAD (not applied yet). I'm in H1B status. When I come Back from Canada, can I still maintain my H1B status to work? I heard that that as long as I don't renew my H1B, I should be OK with the H1B status, once my H1B expire, I have to use EAD. Is this correct? I expect my I485 will be approved before my H1B expires. I don't want to go to US consulate to apply for H1B visa since I don't have much time there. In addition, do I need to apply for canada visa to enter canada? Thanks.
