I have this experience about 3 years ago. I went to Canada with my H1B visa and came back without applying for US visa. Don't hand out your I94 when you leave US.
I think I just show the border officer my H1b document and employment letter. You can call CBP(custom Border port) to ask about whether this rule is still valid. The rule "30 days back from canada do not need visa" was valid for a long time. 3 years ago, after 911, I think USCIS cancelled this rule. But in the border, it is different issue. CBP is different from immigration officer.
