Your status will be AOS if you are laid off. You need to find a new job the sooner the better and do the H-1b transfer, not use EAD. If your H-1b transfer get fully approved with I-94, your status is H-1b. If your H-1b is approved without I-94, just need to go outside U.S. (China, Mexico or Canada) to get an H-1 visa to activate your H-1b status.
If you use EAD and your I-485 is denied, you will be out of status and have to leave U.S.

Seems you'd better use EAD rather than H1 transfer.
