If your LG was never h1 before he used his AOS, then he need to apply for a new H1 on Apil 1st next year, and start working from Oct.

However, what visa status will you two be if 485 denies. You no longer H1 and he cannot go back to F1 either. You two will be out of status right away and need to leave US asap.

So my suggestions is: you cannot count on your LG at all. It is undoable. Just look for another job. Unless, if 485 denied, you two leave US and have company apply for new H1b for you two in the next year, come back in Oct to begin working and start the whole process again.
