Maintaining Permanent Resident Status

As a Permanent Resident of Canada you must meet certain residency obligations to maintain your status. In order to comply with the residency obligations you must have at least two years of physical presence in Canada in every five year period. For the purposes of meeting residency obligations, you can also count residency days if you are outside of Canada for the following reasons:

* You are accompanying your Canadian citizen spouse or common-law partner
* You are accompanying a Canadian citizen parent
* You are working full time for a Canadian business, the Public Service of Canada or a Canadian province
* You are accompanying your Permanent Resident spouse or common-law partner who is outside of Canada and working full time for a Canadian business, the Public Service of Canada or a Canadian province
* You are a child accompanying a Permanent Resident parent who is outside of Canada and working full time for a Canadian business, the Public Service of Canada or a Canadian province
