XBT, PJiang please help: Using EAD or NOT for college freshman

XBT, Pjiang and other experts:

My son is going to college in fall, a part of his finance package is work-study on campus. so we applied EAD for him and just received it. Is it wise to use it during 485 pending? Could you give your advice on it, and what are pros and cons of using it? Some discussions were contradictory so I don't know which one is true. Our priority date is Feb 2005, we are hoping it will become current after October.
