My question is that I will probably use AP to return to the US in the future. If I surrender the AP I-94 as suggested by my lawyer, what would be the meaningful I-94 to state my status when I return - the new AP I-94 or the H-1B I-94?

Any I-94s, in your possession, will become useless, once you have left the country.

Your H-1b I-94 maybe helpful in some cases to show longer legal status of you ONLY when the third party does not check with USCIS.
