Q about EAD card

Friends:
My I 140 has been approved, I 485 in pending. I am going to apply EAD card, since I a got a interview. I have some Qs about the EAD? Could you help me?
1. Can I apply the EAD, and not use it, in case of I did not get the Job? ( I am H1B in University now)
2. How long will it take to be approved?
