Get the SSN for your spouse this year, it is not difficult. Download the form and fill it before you go to SSN office, you could get it in 10 days.
As for 1040X, only filed separately earlier, they can change to joint in 3 years, if filed jointely, you have to change before due date to separately, But, married filing separate can make you lost more benefit than rebate. Just wait until 2008, you can get the tax rebate back. Take it easy.
