Help for application of canadian visitor visa

My Son (under 18) and I are going to visit Canada for short time, and we need only single entry visa. Can my son and I apply visa separately, which cost C$75, or we have to apply visa based on family which cost C$400?

By the way, do they accept US$ and how much US$ =C$75?
