You can not get H-4 status within U.S.because you will have lost your nonimmigration status once you use your EAD. But you can go back to China to get H-4 visa and come back to U.S. to get your H-4 status. I do not think this will be difficult as long as your wife maintain her H-1B status (her job need to be secure).
