usually asks for a letter from the employer. That's why. Actually, eventhough you got laid off before your I140 approval, you will still be qualifed to get GC if your employer promise to hire you once you get GC. In another word, you don't have to work for the petitioner before you get your GC, but you have to work for the petitioner after you get your GC. Did you get it? I know someone got his GC this way.

Talk to your former company and see if this is possible. Good luck.
