Really urgent! Please help

My friend just got fired by his comapny. They filed 485 a few months ago, but still did not get receipt. The lowyer called Immigration office, but was told too many case on their hands, so their is no way to check. Please help how can my friend keep his status before he can find a new job? Or anyway they can prove they have already file I-485 without the receipt?
