If it is H1 transfer ( a form of H1 extension), then the H1 worker can return with H1 I94 and H1 receipt, and dependents can return with H4 I-94. If change of status (from F1, L1,.. to H1) the person should not leave US before H1 approval. With a receipt number, you can check online case status.
