I have the same situation as you, there are many post about this in this BBS, search for previous post and you will have many useful information.
basically you should apply "Zan Zhu Zheng" in the local police office within 30 days after entering China, but it is OK to do it before the traval permit expired, so you kid can stay in China longer; Before your kid leave China, you shold apply "chu Jing Zheng" in local office, it is only valid for 30 days. hope this message helps.
