Usually university adjusts expiration of your I-20 before your OPT starting date. Then you will be on your own in OPT period. You are not out of status untill End of May (total of 14 months).
You need to transfer to another F1 program before grace period ends.Some schools do not accept F1 transfer during grace period. Or, talk to your supervisor of Office of international students to consider re-instate of your F1 program (usually you can apply for reinstatement of F-1 status if you have been out of status for less than 5 months).

You have to be on your own visa status. Some LPR may take a few years to finally become citizens.
