a pi 's role in usa is to train post-doc to be independent researcher. so, they should allow post-doc to explore their own future projects which post-doc could bring away once he/she have an offer for faculty position. the above is rule for pi in usa. most of chinese pi just make a use of the post-doc to collect data,and pulish papers,apply for grants. they don't think about post-doc future in usa.they think you could have a job in company, or go bac to china.
