It takes a long time for the University to process the H-1B visa application package for you (I went through this whole process before and, by the way, I am a Canadian citizen too) and I am afraid that you could not get it before April 1 of this year. For applying to a TN visa for a Canadia citizen like you. you only need to present a border Immigration official your job offer letter as well as a copy of your Ph. D. degree, etc.
