Maybe you can also try to fly to those small cities of Canada, rather than land at border of US/Canada. Immigration officer there should be much more friendly and nicer than those at US/Canada border.
Do not worry about too much, out of status in US maybe is not that bad as you thought, however, you did nothing wrong in terms of Canada immigration law.
