If I-140 is denied, I-485 will be denied immediately. Then your AP is invalid. But I am not sure how the rule applies to if you have used your AP before case is denied. You can consult other DAXIAs.
By the way, if you would like to give me your email, I can sent you some doucments I have that may help you understanding this category and responding to RFE in some ways. I intended to upload to this forum to share with those involved in DIY but I don't know how to upload them. I will ask the chief of the forum later on.
