The bottom line is that you do not start working before 1/1/08.There was only very small possibilities for small troubles (like the rejection of the application because that the lawyer forgot to sign its name etc.), if you choose to start on 1/1/08.

You may also choose to start after you received the CIS receipt notice, which should be safe enough for you.

The safest way is to wait until your transfer is approved in mid January.
if I were you, I might prefer to choose this one, as long as my new employer is not pushing me to start ASAP.
