Both people obtained GC through family greencard petition--unmarried dependents petitioned by their parents. The ground is that married kids are not eligible. They were unmarried when they filed GC, but the marrital status changed before GC was granted. When they applied for visa in consulate, to avoid the immigrant visa being nullified, they still filled in unmarried on their status, pretending both were never married.
So they definitely benefitted from what they hided.
When the applied for citizenship, they probably honestly reported their marriage status (the date). Then CIS figured out something was hiding inside.
Well, you probably did not purposely do a smart move like this.
