My example:
NIW 140/485 PD on July 2005,
September 2005, we experienced the big backlog. But USCIS sent my case to FBI for name check during that time. And my name check cleared on Feb 2007, my hu*****and 's cleared on Oct 2007. By then our PD is current. And our i485 were approved on Oct 24, 2007.
During the big backlog, we knew that our GC won't be approved. So we didn't make any action, just wait. In fact, that was good. Save a lot of time. After our PD current, I worried everyday, checking the case status everyday. Wrote to FL, senator, etc. Wasted a lot of time.
So, you can just wait peacefully. Your case will be approved right after your PD become current! Don't worry!
At least they'll do the name check for you now
