I don't think it is problem. I think the reason why they didn't take off your I94 since it is still valid and multiple entry, they think you maybe still need it?
don't worry about it.
I kown some friends have same situation and they don't have any problem reentering US, especially before 911, some Canadian PR don't get I94 when they enter I94.

may I confirm with you when you left US last time, they didn't check your I94, right?
