One of my friend got his H-1B renewal fully approved after his first-three year H-1B status expired for about three weeks. So, you may be lucky at the same way if yours expired for a short period of time. But, most likely your application will be approved without I-94, and if so, just need to go back to China to get a H-1B visa back.
