Urgent: on 中國護照換發

I am applying doing 中國護照換發 in Houston. It is said that 中國領事館會把舊護照剪角後退還. My question is, when the old one will be returned? Along with the new one or when I submitted the application? When I applied today, they took my old one. Please help asap. If necessary, I will go back to Chinese consulate houston tomorrow asking for it before I drive 400 miles back to home. Thanks.
