H1 Visa or I-485(please help)

The university I am working in normally sponsors J-1. My opt expires end of Jan. I filed I-140 for EB1EA in Aug. But I didn't file I-485 because I don't know if I-140 will be approved.
I'll have to pay almost 2000 dollars for the H1 visa myself. The university does not want to pay anything. (except the anti-fraud should be paid by PI)
I wonder if I can DIY H-1 visa? is it better that I submit the I-485 ?
Or Is it possible for me to get J-1 instead?
I am really short of cash recently!
