You need the receipt of I485 with your valid H-1 Visa to cross the boder on land without the AP.
But your LG has to stay in the US till he received the receipt of I485 if you apply for the GC for him too.
Otherwise, his GC application could be regarded as abandon if the border officer found it.
You could not tell everything to the BO.
