If filing I-539 before the end of Spring semester, then you are duly filed and can wait for the F2 approval (or other decision) without keeping full-time student.
If filed in the summer and decision not made by fall semester, you need to register for fall, otherwise, you application is not considered duly filed. In this case, ask ISO for the possibility of dropping out right after fall registration.
