I forgot to renew my son's H-4 when I got my H-1 done.

Then my school helped me submit an application for my son's H-4 with a letter to USCIS (explaining that they had forgot to do that, which was not a small child's fault, and they thought USCIS does not want to see the boy leave his mother for such a long time to wait for his visa). And, he got his H-4 renewed without traveling to China.
