Don't do that. J1 will bring a lot of trouble to you.

If that professor has money, you can be his F1 student now, needn't wait to next year. Actually he himself doesn't know if he has money next year. If he is a responsible person, and is really interested in your ability, he should let you stay in current university until it become possible for you to be his student. He shoulen't ask you to be his volunteer J1. I don't know if it is possible for J1 without pay.
