you cannot file I-485 if you are not physically in the US

I-485 is called "Adjust permanent residence status". This means you must be in the US to sumbit the application. if you are overseas, you must go through consuling process - as Chinese, must go to Guangzhou American Consulate for immigrant visa. you must file your I-485 either before you leave the US or after you come back. filing after come back - risk: quota may be close then.
