you can return because the card is still valid. Renew if after you return.
You don't lose LPR simply because of GC expires, if you stay in US. Which is unlike non-immigrants, if a non-immigrant I-94 expires (and not in AOS, pending COS/EOS or grace period), he or she is illegal.
