if you transfer status in US to H1, you probably don't have a H1 visa, that stamp in your passport. You do have H1 status.
Or your H1 visa expired.
In both case you have to obtain a H1 Visa while in China. This might always involve background check from a few days to months.
make sure you have valid visa, not just status
