What I wrote in the cover letter was something like this:

"There is a constant debate whether global warming is real. In 2005, I led a research project funded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and found that the temperature has increased two degrees in the past 100 years. The research finding provided solid evidence of global warming and was reported by the New York Times, and Los Angeles Times."

On January 1, 2007, the New York Times reported, “… … … ….”

On January 1, 2007, the Los Angles Times reported, “… … … …”

If the media is not very famous, you may add one or two sentenses describing the media at the end of the paragraph with some quotation marks. If you did not lead the project, you may write something like, "I worked with my colleagues in a research project funded by ..., and found ..."
