xiaobaitu and other experts: Question on withdraw H1B visa appli

Xiaobaitu and other expert, please help me to take a look:

I plan to apply for H1B visa from US embassy in Beijing. I have AP as a backup.My question is if my H1B got checked, should I withdraw it immediately in the interview, or can I wait for several weeks and then withdraw by writing or fax to the US embassy? Since I will need my passport for travel.So if I didn't withdraw immediately in the interview, can I have my passport back? Or the the passport will be kept in the US embassy during the check period?
