I am on H-4 visa and I asked my state's board of nursing if I can take the RN test without a SSN. They told me it is not OK. Then I wrote to them again and told them:
"Thank you for your reply first! I am so sorry to hear that I cant take the RN license exam because I have no Social Security Number.I contacted my local Social Security Administration's officer and told them my situation. They told me that "Social Security Administration will currently issue SSNs to non-citizens who are not otherwise eligible for SSNs for the following nonwork purposes:
- A Federal statute or regulation requires that the alien provide his/her SSN to get the particular benefit or service; or
- A State or local law requires the alien to provide his/her SSN to get general assistance benefits to which the alien has established entitlement.
Under these circumstances the application for an SSN must be accompanied by documentation from the appropriate government entity explaining the need for the SSN. The documentation must be dated and on letterhead stationery. It must specifically identify the non-citizen, the nonwork reason for ! which an SSN is required, the relevant statute or regulation, and the name and telephone number of an official to contact so that the information provided may be verified. It should state that the non-citizen completed all the requirements to receive the benefit/service except for an SSN."
I wanna know if you can do me a favor by sending me a letter explaining that I need a Social Security Number to take the RN license exam in Indiana. I think with your letter I can get a Social Security Number to take the RN license exam."
I emailed our state's BOARD OF NURSING, and the director was so kind,he asked his staff to write a letter for me to verify my conditions. They emailed me that "A letter has been sent to you regarding the social security requirement. the letter has our official letterhead and seal and should be accepted without a problem. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you and have a great day!"
With the letter they sent me, I went to a local SSA and applied the SSN!!!after two months' wait,I got my SSN today! How happy I am!!
