NIW waiting for 485 PD, can I change from H1 to H4?

What if it's only for a short period, and I will find a job in similar area pretty soon? Would having the gap affect the 485 submission and subsequent approval?

My current H1b expires on July 26 this year, what is the latest time that I need to the H1b extension application? Do I have to get the H1b extension approved before my expiration date, or just the receipt notice would suffice?
